NASA to defy government demos ban

Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, says the National Super Alliance (NASA) will proceed with their scheduled demonstrations despite the government’s ban of protests in the Central Business Districts of Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.

Dr. Amollo reads mischief in the move to ban NASA supporters from demonstrating, yet nothing has been labeled against the “Nairobi business community” which he says has been disrupting peace and causing chaos in town.

“That directive is unlawful. We will protect our right as outlined in the constitution and we will proceed with our demonstrations,” said Dr. Amollo.

Amollo, who was accompanied by MPs Simba Arati (Dagoretti North), Antony Aluoch (Mathare) and Esther Passaris (Nairobi Woman Rep) distanced the opposition supporters from the chaos witnessed, insisting that it is the work of the police to protect demonstrators and maintain order in such a case.

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Thursday said that while the constitution provides the right to peaceful protests, NASA supporters “have infringed on other people’s rights” in their street protests to protest against IEBC.

“Following a meeting of the National Security Advisory Committee held earlier today and in accordance with Section 5 of the Public Order Act; due to the clear, present and imminent danger of breach of peace and public order as witnessed in recent demos, the government notifies the public that, for the time being, demonstrations shall not be allowed within CBDs,” Dr. Matiang’i said.

NASA is planning to hold anti-IEBC demonstrations tomorrow (Friday, October 13) and then start daily protests from Monday next week demanding reforms within the electoral commission.
