Narok family in search of man swept away by floods a week ago
According to the family, the five-day search has rendered anxiety with no success since Ole Malit’s 30 minutes' hope to hold on tree faded to the fast moving rain waters which swept him off on April 8.
Speaking to the media after a day-long search on Saturday, Julius Malit, the deceased’s younger brother who also works with the Narok County Government narrated how a man who was accompanying his brother survived.
Malit however blamed the County Government for failure to repair the Naramatoshoriki Bridge which has forced residents to risk their lives and cross through the river bed.
He alleged that he had to buy fuel for a van which has to assist in search thereby advising Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu to reorganize the department. The sentiments were echoed by Moses Malit, who alleged a recent visit by a top official to address the issue in vain.
He too regretted a lack of rescue equipment by the Red Cross diving team who were even exposing themselves to danger while on duty.
Alex Saitabau, the Kenya Redcross volunteer divers’ team leader Narok County made a passionate appeal to the County to provide equipment so as to deliver quality emergency services.
According to Saitabau, since January, his team has recovered 9 bodies under tough conditions.
John Malit, also a family member, decried how residents have to follow an 80km route to Narok town instead of the usual 30 Km on normal road.
Joseph Murtel, a local Naramatoshoriki area elder made a passionate appeal to locals in the area to report any case of a missing blue scarf the old man was last seen in as he warned on safety with floods.
Heavy debri along the banks of the fast moving river waters under a 40 feet wall, a move which was seen to hamper searching efforts.
The bridge was launched in January this year.
