Nandi: Murder suspect jumps to death after police raid his house

Mysteries have shrouded the death of a fugitive murder suspect who allegedly jumped to his death in an attempt to escape police arrest in Nandi County.

The security officers were forced to shoot in the air to disperse the chaotic residents who wanted to block the arrest on Monday night.

In the dramatic incident, the police were acting on intelligence report over the resurfacing of one suspect identified as Dennis Kipyego at his home in Sang’alo village.

Nandi North Police Commander Simon Muli said officers drawn from Chemundu Police Station marooned the house where Dennis had locked up himself and attempted to besiege him.

Police add that Dennis refused to open the door but instead jumped off the roof, sustaining serious injuries.

Muli said the suspect was taken to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital for treatment but unfortunately succumbed to injuries.

“He eventually broke the rooftop and jumped out of the house and unfortunately fell on a sharp object that fatally injured his abdomen. The officers took the suspect to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital where he was pronounced dead on Tuesday morning receiving treatment,” he stated.

Dennis, a student at Kaiboi National Polytechnic was the key suspect in a murder incident that occurred in December last year at Chemuswa.

According to the police report, Dennis is said to have been involved in the killing of his step-brother over a chaotic family land succession dispute.

The preliminary investigation showed that he was largely involved in the execution of the heinous act.

The incident occurred in December last year and all along the runaway suspect has been dodging police dragnet.

For the better part of Tuesday morning, residents of Sang'alo village protested over the police raid questioning the cause of Dennis' death. The residents raised concern over spent cartridges collected outside the suspect's house believing that the police shot the suspect before rushing him to the hospital.

A contingent of police has been deployed to control the situation as the investigation commenced.

James Mutai, one of the deceased relatives said that it is not clear what caused the death of Dennis and called for further investigation.
