A worker at the Naivasha sewer plant was on Monday night attacked and killed by a group of hippos that had invaded one of the ponds.

According to reports, the worker was on his way to work when the incident occurred. He was then rushed to the Naivasha sub-county hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His colleagues expressed fears, narrating how the number of hippos invading the plant has increasingly risen in the last three years.

Antony Njogu, a worker at Naivasha Water, Sewerage and Sanitation Company (NAIWASSCO), pointed out that they are presently working in fear as the animals have camped at the plant since 2020, thereby putting their lives in danger.

Following the attack, area residents led by two MCAs have issued a 24-hour notice to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to move in and remove the animals from the area.

A senior KWS officer who tried to intervene and calm the workers' tempers had a difficult time as the animals - said to be seven in number - continued to camp in one of the ponds.
