Naivasha: Newly circumcised boy sustains horrific wounds after torture by peers

A fifteen-year-old boy has been admitted to the Naivasha sub-county hospital after he was reportedly tortured with hot wires and water by a group of youths in what has been described as an ill-advised 'initiation ceremony'.

The minor, whose body was covered in wounds, was rescued from Mai Mahiu Centre by police and members of the public before being wheeled to the hospital in a desolate state.

Emotions ran high as members of the public, including Naivasha MP Jane Kihara, called for the arrest of all the youths involved in the ghastly action.

The minor told the media from his hospital bed how for three days the two suspects, whom he knows, tortured him to 'initiate and harden him'.

He recounted how he was forced to eat his vomit before being thoroughly beaten with a hot wire and blunt objects .

“I could no longer take the pain, and I rushed out screaming, and when my mother saw me, she called the police, who came to my rescue,” he said.

The boy who sat for his KCPE this year narrated his harrowing ordeal, adding that the perpetrators were local youths well known to him.

According to Kihara, the act was inhumane and beastly, adding that the parents of the minors should be put to task over their role in the incident.

An emotional Kihara said that the newly circumcised boy knew well those behind the torture, adding that police should hunt and arrest them.

“This is one of the most evil incidents I have seen, and it's time parents also came out to protect their boys from criminals, as it’s with this case,” she said.

Speaking after visiting the minor in the hospital, the MP called on parents to use either the church or the Kikuyu council of elders in the initiation ceremony.

“We are losing our culture by allowing outsiders to mentor our newly circumcised boys, and it's time we took charge,” she said.

A clinical officer, Joseph Mbugua, termed the condition of the minor as serious but stable, adding that most of the wounds were infected.

He said that they were making plans to take the boys to the theatre for specialised treatment on the open wounds around the body.

“The blood levels are very low due to massive bleeding, and we plan transfusion as part of the treatment as we stabilise his condition,” he said.
