Nairobians living in Kanjo estates to get affordable houses for free – Sakaja

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja now says that his administration will give priority to residents of Nairobi City Council (Kanjo) estates when the affordable houses are ready.

In an interview with Radio Citizen on Monday, Sakaja said those living in the Kanjo houses will not be required to pay for the new houses under the Affordable Housing project undertaken by the national government.

Instead, they will be given the houses for free, only paying service charges as it has always been.

"There are seven estates we have already awarded including Woodley, Bahati, Shauri Moyo, Jericho... all the people who have been living in our Kanjo houses, who have been paying since the 50s and 60s... all these people we will give them houses for free," Sakaja said.

He added that for instance in Woodley Estate there are 46 houses, but now with the Affordable Housing Project at least 1,975 houses will be built. He said there was no point in selling the 46 houses to the old tenants.

The controversial housing scheme is President William Ruto's project as he seeks to provide affordable houses to low-income earners in the country.

The affordable houses will cost between Ksh840,000 and Ksh5.76 million.  A one-room will cost Ksh840,000, with a monthly instalment of Ksh3,200.

A 3-bedroom house will cost Ksh5.76 million with a monthly payment of Ksh41,800.
