A Nairobi woman has moved to court, suing a doctor over claims that he performed surgery on her without holding a valid practising licence.

Lydia Mokeira Minyega, through her lawyer Danstan Omari, says she was admitted for emergency treatment in early January 2026 following an assault and later underwent surgery.

She alleges that she later discovered the doctor who performed the procedure did not have a valid practising license for 2026, a fact she says was confirmed by both the Social Health Authority (SHA) and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).

The woman claims that mandatory pre-authorisation from SHA was not obtained before the surgery and that she received inadequate post-operative care, leading to swelling, numbness and prolonged hospitalisation.

She further says the manner in which her medical bill was handled exposed her to possible financial loss and insurance complications.

She is seeking urgent court orders to suspend the doctor’s practising license for 2026 and to restrain the relevant regulatory body from issuing or renewing his license pending the hearing and determination of the case.

The KMPDC has been named as an interested party in the suit, which the applicant says raises serious concerns for patient safety and public interest.
