Nairobi residents can expect smoother and
more accessible roads as the national government, in collaboration with the
Nairobi City County, launches a Ksh.2.1 billion road improvement programme
covering 62 kilometres across the capital.
The ambitious
project was unveiled during the official commissioning of the Savanna–Stage 17
Bridge in Soweto, Embakasi, with President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor
Johnson Sakaja announcing that the upgrades will be delivered before the end of
the year.
Under the
national-county partnership, the project will target key constituencies across
the city. Starehe and Kamukunji will receive 7.9 kilometres of new and
rehabilitated roads, the same as Kasarani and Roysambu. Westlands is set to
benefit from 4.9 kilometres, while Dagoretti, Lang’ata, and others are also
included in the plan. Embakasi—covering South, Central, East, and West
constituencies—will receive the largest share, with 24 kilometres earmarked for
construction and rehabilitation.
President
Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing urban
infrastructure.
“We shall
continue partnering with the Nairobi County Government to improve roads and
infrastructure. It is our collective responsibility to ensure every road is
done,” said the President.
Governor
Sakaja, who accompanied the President, commended the swift progress on the
Savanna–Stage 17 Bridge, citing it as a sign of ongoing improvements across the
capital.
“We came here
a few months ago when this road was impassable. The President made a promise,
and today the Savanna–Stage 17 road is ready for use,” said Sakaja.
“In Embakasi East, Aviation Road to Fedha and Gate B Road will also be
completed within three weeks. Many more roads across all 17 constituencies will
be upgraded in the coming months.”
County
officials confirmed that the entire roadworks programme is expected to be
completed by December 2025, aiming to ease traffic congestion, enhance
connectivity, and support economic activity across Nairobi.
