Nairobi records heaviest rainfall as long rains begin across Kenya
The rains, which commenced over the weekend, are anticipated to increase in intensity, with April marking the peak. Brenda Wanga reports.
"The long-awaited onset of the long rains is finally here, at least in the city and its environs," remarks Dr. David Gikungu, Director of KMD.
"Heavy rains started pounding Nairobi over the weekend, and this is just the beginning of the anticipated long rainy season."
According to Dr. Gikungu, "The highest amount of rainfall was recorded in Nairobi.
On Sunday, 124.2, 123.4, and 103.6 mm of rainfall were registered at the Dagoretti, Wilson, and Moi Air Base meteorological stations."
He also adds insights, mentioning, "There will be a break in the rain in Nairobi on Thursday, then it will resume from Friday."
"The rains are expected over many parts of the country in the coming weeks and months," Dr. Gikungu continues. "The meteorological department predicts isolated heavy rains in counties of Kisii, Nandi, Bomet, Kakamega, Bungoma, Siaya, Kisumu, Narok, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, as well as Machakos, Kitui, Kajiado, Taita, and the coast."
While urging caution, he emphasizes, "Those living in flood and mudslide-prone areas should consider moving to safer and higher ground to mitigate the impact of the rains.
The meteorological department states that the factors causing above-normal rainfall last year are still present and could affect the intensity of the rains."
Dr. Gikungu concludes, "Farmers across the country are now urged to plant their seeds, as there is enough moisture to sustain planting. The rains are predicted to last until the month of June, with Kenyans urged to exercise caution to prevent rain-associated disasters."
