Police in Makadara, Nairobi are holding a 24-year-old man who allegedly killed his 93-year-old grandmother on Monday night.

Moses Mwanzia Mathuku is said to have used a kitchen knife to slit the throat of his nonagenarian kin, Esther Toni Ngati, at Mukuru-Mariguini slum in Nairobi's, South B estate.

According to Makadara police boss Timon Odingo, the suspect, who is said to have a history of drug abuse, allegedly handed himself over to police at Mariguini police post following the incident.

"The suspect called and filed a report with the Mariguini police post. He explained that he killed his grandmother by butchering her using a kitchen knife to cut her throat," Odingo said as quoted by the Nation.

"He is known to be a boxer and besides that he is a chronic drug user. However, all this will be investigated and looked at professionally and according to the country's laws."

Odingo further revealed that police led by Makadara DCIO boss Felix Kithuku have since processed and documented the scene where they found the deceased's body lying in a pool of blood.

Detectives also recovered the murder weapon and moved the deceased's body to City Mortuary.

Kithuku, on his part told journalists that detectives had been granted several days by the court to complete investigations into the incident.

"The suspect is in police custody at the Industrial Area police station but we will charge him after completing the investigation," said Kithuku.
