Nairobi Governor Sakaja offers full sponsorship for Kisii medical student forced to hawk after missing HELB loan

23-year-old medical student Edna Kerubo.
Kerubo, whose story was featured on Citizen TV, is pursuing Orthopaedic and Trauma Medicine. She has been juggling her studies during the day while hawking at night to make ends meet.
Her inspiring yet heartbreaking story of resilience captured public attention, highlighting the plight of many struggling students in Kenya.
Upon learning about her situation, Governor Sakaja announced that his administration would cover her tuition fees and upkeep until she completes her studies.
“I will sponsor her studies and her upkeep. She is doing everything she can to stay in school. Edna’s determination is admirable, and we will ensure she achieves her dream of becoming a doctor,” Sakaja confirmed to Citizen TV.
Kerubo is among students who had hopes of a better future the moment she set foot in class to pursue her diploma in 2023, oblivious of what awaited her.
The student, who was brought up by her grandmother in Sombogo, Marani, would later be forced to defer her studies twice after failing to secure a HELB loan, which considerably dented her quest to remain in school.
In an attempt to deal with the problem, she resorted to hawking along the streets of Kisii at night and attending classes during the day.
