Nairobi Expressway will be temporarily closed on Saturday night, September 7 to host the Nairobi City Marathon.

In a statement, Moja Expressway, the company tasked with managing the infrastructure, said the road will be closed from 9:30 pm.

The third edition of Nairobi City marathon will be hosted on Sunday at the Nairobi Expressway which is expected to begin at around 6:30 am.

The 42-kilometre race is aimed at supporting local athletes, promoting tourism and raising money for charity.

The company also confirmed that it would communicate when the expressway will resume operations. Motorists were also advised to plan accordingly for alternative routes during the affected period.

"Please note that the Nairobi Expressway will be temporarily closed from Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 9:30 pm to pave way for the third edition of the Nairobi City Marathon," the statement read in part.

"The resumption of normal operations will be communicated in due course. We kindly urge all motorists to plan their journeys accordingly in advance."

Launched in 2022, the expressway is a 27 Km elevated road that runs from Mombasa Road and passes along Uhuru Highway, Waiyaki Way to terminate at James Gichuru Road.

The road has been pivotal for Nairobi motorists who avoid the congested Mombasa Road and Waiyaki Way traffic, especially during peak hours.

This has seen the average daily usage of vehicles using the road rise from 50,000 cars to 70,000.

According to last year's data, Jean May, Head of Public Relations at Moja Expressway, said that over 180,000 vehicles had subscribed as users of the road by October 2023.
