Nairobi court issues arrest warrant for police officer charged with torturing businesswoman

Muraya is charged alongside Sergeant Abdisalam Ahmed.

Both have pleaded not guilty.

During a hearing at the Milimani Law Courts, the court was informed that Muraya was ill and unable to attend. However, no medical documents or official communication were presented by her legal counsel to support the claim.

The prosecution objected to the explanation and applied for an arrest warrant, claiming Muraya's absence was unjustified. Nairobi Chief Magistrate Lukas Onyina agreed, noting the lack of supporting evidence, and issued the arrest warrant.

According to the prosecution, the officers unlawfully and intentionally ordered the arrest of businesswoman Ayni Hussein Mahammud, detaining her at Muthaiga Police Station for two days in an alleged attempt to intimidate her from pursuing an assault complaint against Abdihakim Saidi Jama.

In addition to the torture charge, the officers also face a second count of abuse of office. The alleged offences occurred on December 31, 2021, at Nairobi’s Eastleigh North Police Station.

The case will be mentioned again on May 19, 2025.
