The National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has raised concern over the increasing number of illicit alcohol-related deaths and illnesses.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, NACADA CEO Anthony Omerikwa warned the public against consumption of alcohol whose quality cannot be verified.

"NACADA wishes to caution the public on the rising cases of illicit alcohol-related deaths and illnesses and urges the public to avoid consumption of alcohol whose quality cannot be verified," said Dr Omerikwa.

This follows the death and loss of eyesight of over 10 individuals who are reported to have consumed ‘suspicious’ alcoholic drinks in Kirinyaga County on Tuesday.

Dr Omerikwa appealed to the County Governments to execute their devolved licensing mandate to control the proliferation of bars and wines and spirits outlets many of which he pointed out do not meet the required standard.

“The Authority continues to work closely with the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) and other law enforcement agencies to intensify the crackdown on substandard, illicit, and counterfeit alcohol to safeguard the public from harmful alcohol."

"We further call on members of the public to support the initiative by reporting any suspected illicit trade in alcohol and any other drugs,” said the NACADA boss.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the Kirinyaga illicit brew incident has risen to 13 after 5 more people succumbed in Kangai and Kandongu villages.

NACADA says investigations are ongoing to establish the contents of the unidentified substance.
