‘My employer’s son sexually abused, impregnated me,’ Mary Wambui recounts painful life after parents abandoned her at 10 years

Mary Wambui on Citizen TV’s Shajara Na Lulu Show.

23-year-old Mary Wambui who hails from Kiambu grew up in an abusive homestead. Her mother was the sole provider because her father was a drunk who she says wasted everything he made on alcohol.

Wambui narrates how her parents abandoned her at the tender of ten years and left her with no parental protection.

“That day, my mother took me to school. She was supposed to bring me lunch as usual but she didn’t. When I went home, she was not there and I have never seen her since then. My father brought in another woman almost immediately and that is how my schooling came to an end,” she said.

Speaking on Citizen TV’s Shajara Na Lulu Show, Wambui recalls her father leaving the house in the company of a woman and never came back. This forced her to move in with a neighbour where she helped with babysitting and house chores.

According to Wambui, the woman who took her in, accused her of killing her child an event that still traumatizes her.

“I used to feed the toddler when her mother went to work, then one day I fed the baby porridge and she slept for like two hours and when the mother came, she found the child had died. She accused me of killing her child and took me to the chief but I was not arrested because of my age,” she recounted.

According to Wambui, she went to the place she called home for years but the woman, still grieving and unable to believe that she did not cause her child’s death threw Wambui out of the house with her little belongings.

“Again, I found myself homeless. The next day I met a man who found me a job as a house maid then one day the son sexually abused me and there was nothing I could have done,” she said.

The abuse went on and according to her, she was scared that she might be chased away thus  she chose to remain silent

“I started throwing up and my boss took me to the hospital, I was pregnant. I told her the son was responsible and she threw me out of the house. I went to Kimende and got a job in her hotel where I met the father of my other children.  He took care of us until the day he started experiencing back pain,” she said.

She got two children with the man, and according to her he started accusing her of selling her body and things between them started getting worse. Then one day when she came back from home, the man was nowhere to be found.

According to Wambui, everyone close to her at some point abandoned her and she found herself questioning herself. She says her life is hard and everything she makes goes to feeding her children.

“I make around Ksh.150 from cleaning clubs and toilets and I spend it on feeding my children,” says Wambui.

She says she does not want to fall in love because she might be abandoned again and prefers to take care of her children. Her children are not attending school and according to her, she is looking for a stable job so that she can provide her children with a better life.
