'My daughter has gone missing in Saudi,' mother appeals for help
The mother of 28-year-old Ann Muthoni is
appealing for help after her daughter, who has been a domestic worker in Saudi
Arabia went missing.
According to Njeri Mwangi, her daughter had
run to the police in Saudi Arabia a few days ago after torture and death
threats by the employer.
The police then handed her over to an
agency that received her in Saudi. However, Muthoni was subjected to physical
and psychological torture by the agency.
When she requested the receiver agency to
contact the Kenyan agency that processed her travel to Saudi, she was forced on
a video call, asked to remain silent and only say that she was fine.
The agency at Saudi then locked her at a
centre where she found another Kenyan lady who was able to smuggle in a mobile
phone. Muthoni used it to share her plight with her family back at home.
Three days later, the family cannot reach
her and her whereabouts remain unknown.
The family now suspects that the two Kenyan
ladies were separated and is appealing to the government of Kenya to intervene
and help them trace Muthoni.
Kenyan domestic workers have continuously reported
cases of mistreatment in the hands of employers in the gulf despite government’s
promise to intervene.
