Mutula Jr: I knew Azimio would lose presidential petition

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr.

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. says he knew the petition filed by Azimio la Umoja One Kenya leader Raila Odinga challenging the August 9  presidential poll results was not watertight.

Speaking on Saturday in Mbooni, Makueni County, Governor Mutula dismissed as weak the petition which was entirely thrown out by the Supreme Court last Monday for lacking merit.

This, he said, he had already told Makueni Senator Daniel Maanzo, who was among Azimio’s lawyers, before the team formally lodged the petition at the apex court seeking to nullify William Ruto’s win.

“I told Maanzo before the petition that they will lose that case, even before they went to court. If the man who was leading us had already ditched the party and moved elsewhere, how were we supposed to win the case?” the county boss posed, seemingly referring to his predecessor Kivutha Kibwana’s move to the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

“If we did not have agents, how were we supposed to win? We were beaten squarely in broad daylight.”

According to the Makueni leader, what he and the senator are now focusing on is working with the Kenya Kwanza administration to ensure the Kamba community is represented in Dr. Ruto’s administration.

Saying they are tired of always being in the opposition, Mutula noted: “I told Maanzo that we must take our community into leadership, we are done with always being the ones casting stones…”

“It is time to figure out what to do to help our community,” he added.

Led by Chief Justice Martha Koome, the Supreme Court on Monday unanimously upheld the election of President-elect William Ruto in the August 9 polls.

"We declare the election of the first respondent as President-elect to be valid..." CJ Koome ruled.

The Supreme Court incinerated startling allegations by Azimio’s lawyers that Forms 34A on the IEBC server were tampered with by deported Venezuelan national Jose Camargo.

CJ Koome labelled the claims “no more than hot air” and singled out lawyer Julie Soweto.

The Chief Justice also pointed out that the logs presented by the petitioners were “outright forgeries”.

Meanwhile Dr. Ruto’s swearing-in ceremony will be held on Tuesday, September 13.

At least 20 Heads of State and government officials across Africa will also be expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony at the Moi International Sports Complex in Kasarani, Nairobi.
