Governor Mutua: If there is to be a 'handshake' between Raila, Ruto, it should be brokered by Uhuru

This follows Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru's suggestion that President Kenyatta and DP William Ruto shake hands and commit to clean politics. 

Governor Mutua claims that DP Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is pushing for the handshake with personal interests, but that the UDA party may be underestimating the importance of such an agreement.

He claimed that a handshake is a symbolic agreement, and that if the two sign it, they must prioritize national unity and bridge their political divides.

"It is the UDA side who are calling for the handshake and maybe they feel that they have been fixed to a corner and they are trying to get any kind of 'bonga points'. You have heard Governor Waiguru talking about its your legacy, come and shake hands but what is the significance of the handshake?" posed Mutua speaking on Citizen TV's Daybreak Show.

He added: "It is to their benefit if they see Uhuru Kenyatta coming to shake hands with DP Ruto. But handshakes are not just handshakes, it is an agreement. For me I think if there is going to be a handshake, the handshake that should be there should be coordinated by President Kenyatta and should be between Raila Odinga and William Ruto, a handshake that says we are going to play clean politics. That's a handshake we want but not a symbolic handshake."

Governor Waiguru who was addressing her supporters on Tuesday, said that the handshake between DP Ruto and President Kenyatta would foster unity and dignity.

"Sisi tunakuomba kwa heshima, miezi nne ambayo imebaki tafadhali fanya handshake na William Ruto ndio watu wawe upande mmoja ukienda nyumbani. Tunakuomba umsalimie ndio uende nyumbani na heshima," said Waiguru.
