Murang’a County to sponsor 31,416 households under Kang’ata Care Health Program
According to a joint statement by the County and the Social Health Authority, under this agreement, Murang'a County will sponsor 31,416 indigent and vulnerable households to receive health insurance coverage through SHA.
The program dubbed Kang’ata Care will run for one year, from 1st January 2025 to 31st December 2025, ensuring these households can access affordable, high-quality healthcare services without financial hardship.
"Murang’a County takes pride in being the first county in Kenya to implement this mandate, setting a benchmark for other counties. This initiative highlights the strength of collaboration between national and county institutions in addressing healthcare needs and strengthening Kenya’s social safety nets," reads the statement in part.
The Social Health Insurance Act, of 2023, gives effect to the right to health by empowering counties to provide health services to those in need. Under this Act, counties serve as Contributors, supporting households identified through the Means Testing Instrument as requiring financial assistance.
Through this program, the beneficiaries will receive benefits including; an essential healthcare package covering inpatient and outpatient services, maternity care and emergency care, Chronic illnesses and critical care through contracted healthcare providers within Murang’a County.
"Premiums for beneficiaries will be paid quarterly in advance by the Murang'a County Government, ensuring seamless and uninterrupted access to services throughout the coverage period," said Governor Kang'ata.
The Social Health Authority CEO Robert Ingasira noted that SHA will manage the registration of beneficiaries, provide ongoing support, sensitize communities about the program, and ensure beneficiaries access the full range of health benefits without disruption.
According to Governor Kang'ata, the county administration will actively identify and profile indigent households, provide accurate records, and mobilize beneficiaries during registration exercises.
