Mudavadi will be summoned to shed light on Besigye's abduction - MP Nelson Koech

Belgut MP Nelson Koech speaks during Daybreak interview at Citizen TV studios on October 22, 2024.

Belgut Member of Parliament (MP) Nelson Koech has noted that the Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary (CS) Musalia Mudavadi will be summoned to elucidate the abduction of Uganda's opposition leader Kizza Besigye.

Besigye was reportedly abducted in Nairobi by unknown persons on November 16, where he had prepared to attend Martha Karua's book launch.

Koech, who chairs the National Assembly Defence and Foreign Relations committee, said that all relevant leaders will be invited to shed light on the matter, starting with Mudavadi who is also the acting Interior CS.

"I made an undertaking that we are going to invite the relevant leaders to shed light on what exactly happened. I will invite Musalia Mudavadi to come and explain what exactly happened," he said.

"I do not want us to be emotional on an issue we can easily get the details and we address it."

The legislator, despite a heaping distrust of the Kenyan security authorities, said that Kenya is a peaceful state and no foreigner should feel insecure about visiting the nation.

"We are a peaceful country, we host people [and] we are recognised for doing that and Besigye himself felt comfortable to come into the country," he said.

Koech's statement comes in the wake of rampant kidnapping incidents in the nation, raising doubts on the integrity of security authorities.

Some of these abductions have even led to death as some of the victims of the anti-Finance Bill protests were discovered dead in various parts of the nation.

Meanwhile, Besigye has faced charges relating to security and possession of firearms illegally after being taken to a Ugandan military jail where he was detained until Wednesday.
