Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has established 578 new administrative units to meet the growing population growth across the country.

Mudavadi, in his role as Interior CS, gazetted the new units comprising 27 Sub-Counties, 59 divisions, 170 locations and 322 sub-locations.

The units, according to the CS, will improve Kenyans' access to government services and address security issues in the respective areas.

Some of the new Sub counties include Magarini South, Magarini North, Akachiu, Mukothima, Ndithini, Illeret, Kolowa, Baringo West, Mukutani and Saboti.

Others include Samburu West, Ndhiwa East, North East Kano, Ndhiwa West, Siaya West, Embakasi East, Embakasi West and Embakasi North.

In the notice, some of the old sub-counties were renamed to the new units; Maua (renamed from Igembe South), Zombe (renamed from Mutitu), Sigowet (renamed from Soin Sigowet), Tiaty Central (renamed from Tiaty West) and Ndhiwa West (renamed from Ndhiwa).

This is in line with section 14 (1) of the National Government Co-ordination Act, 2013 which stipulates that the Interior CS designates new units with the approval of the president and a notice published in the Gazette.

"In establishing the national government service delivery co-ordination units, the Cabinet Secretary shall accord and respect the county government decentralised units established under section 48 of the County Government Act, 2012," reads part of the Act.
