MPs threaten to impeach CS Muturi for 'inciting Kenyans against Gov't'
Members of the National Assembly have demanded the resignation
of the Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi whom they accuse of
inciting Kenyans against the government.
The MPs have threatened an impeachment motion against the CS
for accusing the Director General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS),
Noordin Haji, of being the "abductor-in-chief."
The legislators spoke during a special sitting of the National
Assembly that saw them approve three Cabinet Secretary nominees allied to
retired President Uhuru Kenyatta for appointment after their vetting on
Tuesday.
Mutahi Kagwe was cleared for the agriculture docket, William
Kabogo for ICT, and Lee Kinyanjui for the Investments, Trade, and Industry
Ministry.
During the session, the MPs sensationally claimed Muturi is
playing to the gallery after being demoted in Cabinet.
"It is sad that some CSs are now playing to the public
gallery, exciting emotions on the basis of ethnicity and regions they come
from,” said National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah.
Minority Leader Junet Mohamed added, “If my son is arrested, I
should also tell the country why he was arrested… why wait for seven months to
say those things?"
The MPs, who claimed Muturi’s actions were caused by his
disquiet over his demotion in Cabinet, called for his resignation while
threatening an impeachment motion against him if he stayed on.
"The honourable thing for a CS to do is to resign. If you
feel you have been reassigned to another docket lower than what you had,
resign! We know you are almost being fired and you wanted to keep stealing,”
Ichung’wah stated.
Junet on his part said, "Nothing stops us from bringing
an impeachment motion against you…"
Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, in a thin-veiled comparison of Muturi
to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, added: "There is a chief in
Mathira who was inciting Kenyans and was fired."
Muturi has this week hit the headlines after spilling the
beans and linking NIS boss Haji to a string of abductions, including that of
his son, Leslie Muturi, at the height of the Gen Z-led protests.
The House will now remain adjourned until next month when the
legislators resume sittings after a long recess.
