MPs slap taxpayers with Ksh.205M bill for Mombasa induction
Members of
Parliament on Monday this week concluded their induction retreat in Mombasa,
leaving Kenyans with a huge bill to pay.
During the
one-week induction retreat, the MPs are said to have spent about Ksh.205,235,000
to cater for their allowances, accommodation, and air tickets.
From the amount,
the 349 lawmakers spent about Ksh.5,235,000 on air tickets, Ksh.112,378,000 on
accommodation, and another Ksh.87, 948,000 on allowances.
This expenditure,
however, could've gone a little higher after the legislators extended their stay in the
Coastal city for three extra days to recover for the period in which they
boycotted the induction process.
The first two days
of the induction hit a snag after the lawmakers left the Pride Inn Paradise Beach Resort proceedings in protest of delayed release of the National Government
Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF).
At the time, the
MPs who demanded an audience with Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u
demanded the funds be released before the induction begins.
Following the
two-day stand-off, the taxpayers lost up to Ksh.28,708,000; an amount the
lawmakers spent without taking part in the actual induction proceedings.
