MPs push for introduction of sex education in schools
Speaking in Mombasa during a meeting to discuss the Family Reproductive Health and Assisted Reproductive Health bills, the Parliamentarians maintained that this is the only way to help adolescents understand risks involved in sexual activities.
On the other hand, they said the Introduction of Comprehensive Health Education as a core subject in school will ensure students receive comprehensive knowledge on issues of sex.
The legislators also said that if their proposals are passed by parliament, students will be able to deal with high rates of pregnancies, sex abuse and other sexually transmitted diseases.
The MPs including Millie Odhiambo (Suba North MP), Martha Wangari (Gilgil MP) and Catherine Muma (nominated MP) said religious leaders need to be on the forefront by giving views that will save the young generation and other minority including intersex people.
A section of religious leaders have opposed the move, saying teaching sex education in schools, could be introducing young people to sex at an early age in the country.
Two months ago, Kirinyaga women representative Jane Njeri Maina, tabled the motion in Parliament seeking to address the current existing gap in sex education.
