MPs Kimani Ichung’wah, Mwangi Kiunjuri heckled during Ruto's Nyandarua tour
President William Ruto’s allies, among them the National
Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, have faced the wrath of hostile
crowds at a rally in Nyandarua County after they were booed by residents.
Speeches by Ichung’wah and Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri
were cut off by angry crowds at Ol-Kalou, who heckled them.
The crowds appeared to boo leaders from the region who
supported the ouster of the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The outspoken Kikuyu MP had taken to the podium with gusto,
but the crowd quickly turned hostile drowning his voice in the noise, forcing
him to cut short his speech, which had seen him switch from English to the
local dialect.
When he got a favorable ground in Murang’a County, Ichung’wah
commented on the heckling incident.
"Na msiwekwe uwoga na hao watu wa kupiga kelele. Kelele
wapige sisi tuangalie mambo ya kazi. Siasa ikifika tutakuja tuulizane mbunge
amefanya kazi gani…wale wa kelele tuwaachie kelele. Wale wa ndevu tutawanyoa
ndevu na mwenye anataka imee imee,” he said.
Nyandarua Woman Representative Faith Wairimu Gitau also ran
into headwinds with a charged crowd in Engineer Modern Market, Kinangop,
Nyandarua County.
Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri also joined those who were
having a bad day in the President's tour of the region.
But it was not all gloom and doom for the ruling camp, as
Maragua MP Mary Wamaua, a key ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua,
appeared to shift her loyalties.
"Nimekuwa nikiongea na Naibu Rais tangu November… Your
Excellency niko hapa nitumie kama kanda ya mkono tukipeleka kazi ya Maragua na
Murang’a mbele,” said Wamaua.
The President on his part said: "Huyu mama kweli ni
mchapa kazi. Sasa nilikuwa nashangaa anafanya nini na watu wa fitina hawajui
kufanya kazi."
His deputy Prof. Kithure Kindiki, added: "Mimi Rais
ntaendelea kuwa Mr. Yes Sir. Kibaki alikuwa Mr. Yes Sir, Uhuru alikuwa Mr. Yes
Sir na wewe ulikuwa Mr. Yes Sir."
President Ruto also dismissed the move by the Controller of
Budget, Margaret Nyakang’o to put brakes on bursaries by county executives.
"Rais utusaidie turudishiwe ile mambo yetu ya bursary,”
Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata said.
In his response, President Ruto said, "Bursary ni haki ya
watoto wetu wote. Hakuna watoto wa national government, hakuna watoto wa county
government. Mimi sikubaliani na ule mama Controller of Budget alisema county
governments hawafai kupatiana bursary."
