Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan has distributed food supplies to over 1,000 people displaced by floods in the constituency.

Speaking at the constituency distribution centre, Yusuf regretted that the raging floods witnessed in the past few days have left devastating effects on families and school-going children.

He has also called upon stakeholders to come and offer help to children severely affected by floods, especially during this time that they are preparing to open schools next week.

“They have lost everything with the floods, birth certificates, school certificates, clothes and all their belongings. With schools opening on Monday, we hope that the food donated by BBS mall will go a long way in ensuring the kids don’t go to school hungry and have a decent meal when they return home,” he said.

Those severely affected by floods are communities residing in Majengo, Kitui Village, Blue Estate in Pumwani, Shauri Moyo Ward, Kinyago, Kanuku, and City Carton in California Ward, as well as Mugunda, Mlolongo, Motherland, and Kiambiu in Eastleigh South.

Rose Ayuma, one of the residents, says they have been forced to spend nights with their children in the cold after their houses were marooned by water.

“When the floods came, we were deeply affected. We have young children who were forced to sleep in the cold after our homes were filled with water. It didn’t stop there; the bulldozers then came and broke our houses into pieces. We are very grateful for the food donation from BBS Mall and our MP Yusuf Hassan,” Ayuma said.

The heavy rains and flash floods have left over 250 people dead, displaced over 194,305 individuals, and affected over 205,000 households across the country.

Crops on approximately 9,816 acres of land have also been destroyed and 61 health facilities affected by the floods in 11 Counties.

A total of 44 Cholera cases have also been reported so far, with the Ministry of Health and the Kenya Red Cross conducting medical outreach programmes as well as cholera control and other waterborne diseases in counties worst hit by the floods.

Surveillance efforts have been bolstered in flood-affected counties as rainfall is expected to persist in various parts of the country, particularly in Nairobi, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria basin, the Coastal strip and segments of Northern Kenya.
