MP Toroitich calls for recusal of Speaker Wetangula in Gachagua impeachment proceedings

Marakwet West MP Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich

Marakwet West MP Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich has called for Speaker Moses Wetangula and the Deputy Speaker to recuse themselves from overseeing the impeachment proceedings against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The move came during a heated session in Parliament, which saw the motion for impeachment gain overwhelming support from MPs.

Toroitich questioned the impartiality of both Speaker Wetangula and the Deputy Speaker, claiming that their prior comments on the matter showed a bias that could jeopardize the fairness of the hearing.

"As a neutral arbiter, Mr. Speaker, it is on record that you and the Deputy Speaker have taken sides on this matter. To ensure the Deputy President receives a fair hearing, would it be in order for both of you to recuse yourselves from this matter so that the deputy president can be given a fair hearing before this house?”Toroitich said, addressing the Speaker.

He also questioned the motive behind Gachagua's impeachment at a time when the ruling party ought to be implementing their manifesto.

"My conscience is against the letter, the spirit and the intent of the impeachment motion against the Deputy President. Let history record that I, Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich, NEVER supported the impeachment of the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. God bless Kenya," he stated.

The DP only managed less than 20% of the House, as the MPs in the National Assembly shot over and beyond the required 117-member threshold by 174 members to have the historic motion tabled.

Gachagua did not walk alone despite being lonely at the top; 54 members currently serving did not sign the ouster motion, choosing to watch from a distance.

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, who has fashioned himself as President Ruto’s blue-eyed boy, did not feature in the long list of supporters of the motion, whose names were preceded by chants of "patriot!"

A majority of the MPs from his county of Murang’a stood with the ‘truthful man’, who is facing new realities.

Marakwet West MP Timothy Kipchumba from President Ruto’s Elgeyo Marakwet bastion, opined that there were no sufficient grounds to hang the noose on Gachagua’s neck.
