MP Mbui: What is Uhuru financing in these protests, stones?

National Assembly Deputy Minority Whip Robert Mbui.

Kathiani Member of Parliament Robert Mbui has hit out at leaders in government who have floated accusations against former president Uhuru Kenyatta, claiming that he is financing the anti-government protests.

This is after leaders, among them President William Ruto, alleged that Uhuru has been secretly funding Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga to call for protests that have recently turned ugly with numerous deaths recorded.

According to Mbui, the leaders are only making groundless accusations since they have not cited any proof ever since they launched their attacks on Uhuru.

He questioned what could possibly show that there is financing from the former Head of State, yet there has been no clear indication of foreign apparatus present in the demonstrations.

"How do you say that they are being financed, what are you paying for? There are no guns, vehicles, ammunition, so what is it that you are saying is being paid for unless you are saying that Uhuru is paying for stones and stones are littered all over the country," he said on Citizen TV's Daybreak show on Monday.

He went on to urge leaders to cease making insightful remarks against Uhuru, noting that they pose a threat to security in the nation.

"We need to put to rest the issue of Uhuru and his presidency because it's over but when you listen to the tone that the President has taken because you listen to the words he talked he said tutakusafirisha. What do you mean because there is a plan to safirisha Uhuru and Raila. What is the veiled message there? I am very worried," he said.

"It is unfortunate that these are words coming out of the head of state. This country is for all of us let us be careful [on] how we address each other. We need to respect each other."

The legislator was citing President Ruto's warning to Uhuru and Odinga where he vowed to conclusively deal with Odinga politically and also presumably have Uhuru swept away by the government’s wave and retired.

“Nataka nimwambie rafiki yangu Uhuru, ata wewe wachana na huyu mzee (Odinga), wacha kumpatia pesa ya kununua watu wa Mungiki wachome Nairobi. Wewe umekuwa rais, kuwa mungwana, tulikuunga mkono wakati ulikuwa rais wetu, uliunga mtu wa kitendawili mkono tukamwangusha, wachana na yeye,” he said.

“Usipowachana na yeye, ata wewe tutakusafirisha na huyo kitendawili wako. Uhuru Kenyatta tulimsaidia akiwa Rais, sasa anapanga kuchoma Nairobi, imemkosea nini?”

Mbui was responding to Belgut MP Nelson Koech, who alleged that Uhuru has been financing the protests and has even compromised the Judiciary to influence the decision on the contentious Finance Bill.

"He is financing, that is the matter we have said will be handed over to the investigative agencies. There is a lot of money that is going round from funding Mungiki to financing Azimio directly even using some of their connection in Judiciary to frustrate this Finance Act," said Koech.
