MP Mbui calls out gov't for defying court order after EPRA effected new fuel prices

Kathiani Member of Parliament Robert Mbui has called out the Kenya Kwanza government for defying court orders after the Energy Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) increased fuel prices.

This is despite a High Court order stopping the implementation of the Finance Act 2023, which among many proposals, wants a tax increment on fuel from 8% to 16%.

According to Mbui, parliament was pushing Kenyans into a corner until when the courts came to their rescue by stopping the implementation of the hikes on fuel levy.

Mbui pointed out that it was unfortunate to see EPRA increasing fuel prices despite the court order, a clear indication that Kenya is being led by a defiant government which cares less about its suffering citizens.

He was speaking during a retirement party of Kathiani Primary School headteacher on Saturday.

The legislator went on to add that leaders should be bold enough to call out the government and stand up for those they represent in Parliament.

In the same breath, he chastised those who voted in favour of the Finance Bill in parliament, saying that they are doing an injustice to their electorate.

He added that it is unfair for Kenyans to pay more as all goods have been hiked yet there is a proposal to increase salaries for state officers including President William Ruto and Deputy Rigathi Gachagua to shield them from the increased tax rates.

The Court order was issued after Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah challenged the Finance Act, 2023 seeking to have some sections of the law purged.

The increase which took effect on Saturday midnight has already pushed the cost of transport up with the players in the sector hiking fare prices.
