MP Kirima regrets voting to impeach Gachagua with hope that Kindiki would get DP post

According to Kirima, the MPs purposely voted to send Gachagua home, with the hope that his position would be given to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.

Kindiki hails from Tharaka Nithi, which is part of the Mt. Kenya East region.

"We believed as Meru MPs that number two is supposed to take that place of number one. So we signed on the strength that Kindiki is going to be appointed as the DP. But from the time we passed that impeachment things are not as they were," Kirima said. 

He said that during the picking of his running mate ahead of the 2022 presidential elections, Kindiki emerged top but President William Ruto settled for Gachagua against the wish of many UDA members. 

Kirima argued that since Kindiki was second, he deserves to take over from the impeached Gachagua, whose fate now relies on the Senate, and indeed the Judiciary. 

The MP now says their wish might not be met as there has been a lot of lobbying from people who believe Gachagua will be kicked out of office.

"A number of communities are lobbying to have their own as the number two. Now we are hearing of somebody like Irungu Kang'ata, they are even lobbying us to support them. There is also Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah, there is Anne Waiguru... they are also mentioning Gladys Wanga, and even sometimes they are bringing the name of Raila Odinga... so it's not straightforward as it was, so I am so much concerned," Kirima added.

He further averred that it should be the people from the Meru region to be considered first by giving Kindiki the post of deputy president if Gachagua is successfully removed from office. 

Kirima claims that by handing the position to Kindiki, the people of Mt. Kenya East region will greatly benefit as he (Kindiki) understands the needs of the region better.

Kirima said were it not for Kindiki, he would not have voted for the impeachment of Gachagua.
