MP David Sankok has come out to forgive Embakasi East legislator Babu
Owino for hiding his crutches during a special sitting of Parliament on
December 22, 2021.
Despite saying that the ordeal could have endangered his life in the event of an emergency, Sankok now insists that the incident is fully behind him and he has no qualms with Owino.
“By
the time I realized that my crutches were missing, I couldn’t move or even go
to the lavatory. If a fire broke out I would have been helpless but because of
my values as a Christian I have decided to forgive Owino,” Sankok told Citizen
Digital.
Sankok,
however, criticized Owino and a section of Members of Parliament who allegedly
claimed that his crutches could be used as make-shift weapon if chaos erupted
in the House.
“Those
saying that my crutches can be used as weapons are wrong. They are just tools I
use for walking. If I were to use them as weapons, the said persons could also
use their legs to attack me as well and I wouldn't be able to do the same. It
will never come to that though because we are all peaceful,” he added.
Sankok, who is the representative of Persons Living With Disabilities in the National Assembly, consequently underscored that when he meets Owino at the next Parliament sitting, it will just be business as usual as he has no bone to grind with him.
“When
we meet on December 29, our relationship as colleagues will still be intact, but
let’s use our minds to formulate new laws and debate in Parliament,” he stated.
Owino,
during a Wednesday Parliament sitting, hid Sankok’s crutches, in what
introduced a light moment during an otherwise chaotic session.
The
MPs had gathered at Parliament buildings to discuss the proposed controversial
changes to the Political Parties Amendment Bill, when midway through the
session Sankok raised alarm that his crutches were missing.
Deputy
Speaker Moses Cheboi was forced to temporarily bring the proceedings to a halt
and mount a search for the missing crutches.
After
being identified as the culprit, Owino came clean and admitted that he was
indeed responsible for hiding the crutches, to the amusement of other MPs.
The
controversial MP later took to social media to claim he took it upon himself to
confiscate the crutches as the debate was emotional and that they could’ve been used
as weapons if tempers flared.
“Tangatanga MPs were debating with emotions. They
could have used Hon. Sankok crutches as weapon to unleash violence on us,
I saw it prudent to hide them until they cool down,” he wrote.
