More families displaced as floods wreak havoc in Homa Bay

More families in the flood-prone areas in Homa Bay County continue to leave their homes after being displaced by raging floods following the ongoing El-Nino rains.

At Koyugi location within Karachuonyo Constituency, over 100 people from Bala and Maswa villages were displaced from their homes last evening after river Awach Tende broke its banks due to heavy downpours on Sunday night.

The families were evacuated to Bala and Buru primary schools after their homes were marooned by water from River Awach Tende.

Koyugi Chief Irene Ojwang says that more than 50 houses were also damaged by floods and are inhabitable anymore.

Crops in large tracts of land were also washed away by the floods as several household items were destroyed. Chicken and other domestic animals in the affected homesteads were also killed by the floods.

The residents have appealed to both levels of the government to provide them with a long-term solution to the problem.
