The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives in Malindi, Kilifi County, have arrested two robbery suspects believed to be part of a criminal gang responsible for a recent break-in within the area that resulted in the theft of property of unknown value.

One of the suspects, 34-year-old Victor Otieno, was arrested after police, acting on intelligence reports, laid an ambush along the Kilifi-Malindi Road on Wednesday.

Police reports indicate that Otieno was aboard a motorcycle, Reg. No. KMGC 208C, with another suspect, when they ignored the officers’ order to stop at the Kilifi bridge, prompting the detectives to open fire.

“At about 1530hrs, a motorcycle reg. no. KMGC 208C make hawk white in colour came speeding from Malindi towards Mombasa general direction and was challenged to stop as it approached Kilifi bridge. They declined to stop prompting the officers to open fire,” a police report documenting the incident reads.

“A shoot out started and extended to Mnarani centre whereby the said motorcycle lost control and veered off the road.”

Otieno was arrested, but the rider, who reportedly fired back at the officers during the high-speed chase, managed to escape.

“The one who escaped was pursued to Mtwapa area but was not found,” the police report reads.

The operation continued through the night, with another suspect, 74-year-old Msilim Salim Msilim, being apprehended.

“The following recoveries were made; two motorbikes reg. no. KMGB 004M make boxer red in colour and KMGE 209V make Honda, motor vehicle reg. no. KDP 966N make Toyota Corolla silver in colour, two gold chains, two gold earrings, nine rings, two bracelets, baby rings, a jewelry box, gold earrings, and other assorted items.

The duo remains in custody pending arraignment while the manhunt for the suspect who evaded arrest continues.
