MoH intensifies border screening for Ebola, Marburg virus

Public Health and Professional Standards PS Mary Muthoni speaking in Kisumu.

The Ministry of Health has intensified surveillance and screening at all 26 ports of entry into the country in the wake of the discovery of Ebola and Marburg in the neighbouring countries.

Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has said that the screening and surveillance are also meant to contain the spread of MPox where so far 41 cases have been reported in the country.

Speaking in Gichugu on Saturday, the PS reiterated the government's commitment to ensure Kenyans are safe from the emerging diseases in the neighbouring countries.

The PS said that Ebola has been reported in Uganda while Marburg has been reported in Tanzania and as such anyone coming from outside the country must undergo thorough screening.

Muthoni has also cautioned expectant and breastfeeding women against the use of alcohol, drug and substance abuse to protect the unborn and breastfeeding babies.

The PS noted that the children feed from what their mothers have consumed and as such the use of the drugs and other substances endangers the health and wellbeing of the children even when they grow up.
