Protests erupted and continued for the better part of Tuesday evening in the Mlango Kubwa area of Nairobi following the alleged shooting to death of a man by police officers.

Angry residents burnt tires and barricaded the busy Juja Road to protest the death of 29-year-old James Nungu Nziva.

Nziva died after being hit by a stray bullet allegedly fired by an officer who was after an offender who had snatched a mobile phone.

The deceased’s widow said: “Nilimpigia simu aende achukue motto shuleni tukakubaliana…after dakika tano nikakuja kuambiwa ameshootiwa, alikuwa tu amekaa bila makosa yoyote. Sio mwizi, hajaiba kitu ya mtu, na ata kama ni mwizi si anashikwa anapelekwa station, mbona auliwe?”

The Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA) has commenced investigations into the killing which has put the police service yet again on the spot over reckless shootings.
