MKU unveils maritime academy to boost blue economy, maritime education

The MKU Maritime Academy in Malindi.

Mount Kenya University (MKU) has announced the establishment of its Maritime Academy in Malindi is which is expected to significantly advance the country's education sector.

The institution, which marks the first privately-funded maritime training institution in the country, aims to equip students with essential skills for the maritime industry.

Situated in Malindi, a coastal town with rich historical and economic connections to the Indian Ocean, the MKU Maritime Academy leverages its strategic location to offer access to maritime training, which has traditionally been limited to government-sponsored institutions.

This new academy provides students with alternative pathways for education, facilitating increased enrollment and an innovative curriculum tailored to meet global maritime demands.

Proximity to key shipping lanes, marine resources, and a thriving tourism industry positions the academy to combat local unemployment by aligning training opportunities with the region’s maritime heritage.

The training programs at the academy support Kenya’s Blue Economy initiative, which emphasizes the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth and job creation. With courses focused on marine navigation, shipbuilding, fishing technology, marine conservation, and logistics, the academy aims to produce environmentally conscious graduates capable of leading sustainable maritime ventures.

Emphasizing technology and innovation, the academy incorporates advanced tools such as navigation simulators and modern facilities for marine engineering and port logistics into its training programs.

The maritime academy is anticipated to generate employment opportunities for both staff and graduates. It will engage local teachers and administrative personnel while equipping graduates with the skills necessary for careers in shipping, logistics, and port management.

Aligned with Kenya’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the academy includes programs focused on marine conservation and sustainable fishing practices. This ensures that while students learn to harness the economic potential of ocean resources, they also develop the knowledge to protect the marine environment.
