A miner aged 45 years drowned in a goldmine in Kurutyange village, in Kuria West, Migori county.

Kuria West sub-county police commander Cleti Kimaiyo said the deceased, identified as James Robi Nyahure, met his death while mining gold.

Kimaiyo said the police received a report from the area assistant chief and when they rushed to the site, they found the body already retrieved from the mine which was full of water.

The sub-county police commander said their preliminary investigation established that the deceased was epileptic and they suspect that he might have encountered the attack while inside the mine.

Kimaiyo said the body of the deceased has been moved to Kuria West sub county hospital mortuary, pending police investigations and autopsy.

Meanwhile the sub county police commander called on miners to be cautious while in their activities to avert deaths. He urged them to always assess the safety of the mines before they go inside.
