Isaac Mutuma M'Ethingia, who has served as the Deputy Governor of Meru County since 2022 has now assumed governor position.

This follows the impeachment of Governor Kawira Mwangaza by the Senate in 2024, which was upheld in a court ruling on March 14, 2025.

Mutuma took oath of office at Mwendantu Grounds in Meru County on Monday. The ceremony was graced by leaders from in and out of the County.

Meru leaders say the first biggest assignment is for Mutuma to unite Meru County, which has been rocked by unending battles since the election of Mwangaza in 2022.

Majority Whip Jim Muchui earlier said the Ameru have suffered due to lack of leadership and stability, as the new Sherriff is highly expected to bridge the gap between the Assembly and Executive in the County.

“For the last two years Meru has been divided. His first responsibility is to see how he can unite the people of Meru and the leadership,” said Muchui.

“We also expect the Governor to immediately submit the supplementary budget in the Assembly because there is an itemized budget we did and the former governor blatantly refused to implement,” he added.

In August 21, 2024 26 senators voted to impeach Mwangaza on charges including on gross misconduct and violation of the constitution and other laws. 14 senators abstained, while four voted in her favour.

This was the third impeachment motion against Mwangaza to be tabled at the Senate.
