Medical student cons his parents in fake kidnapping, gets robbed by ‘mchele babe’ in Thika
Police have arrested a medical student who is reported to have faked his own kidnapping in a bid to unscrupulously obtain money from his parents.
23-year-old
Edwin Kamau, a student at Makindu Medical Training College, is said to have
gone into hiding last Sunday and blocked his father on phone before calling his
mother claiming to have been kidnapped.
According
to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kamau told his mother that
his kidnappers wanted a ransom of Ksh.70,000, to set him free before he hanged
up on her.
“His
distraught parents reported the matter to police officers who immediately
launched a manhunt for the kidnappers. However, the calls persisted with Kamau
telling his mother that his kidnappers were on the verge of eliminating him,” said
the DCI in a statement.
In a bid to
save their son’s life, the parents sent the first instalment of Ksh.10,000 on
Wednesday, July 6 which oblivious to them, would be used by Kamau to entertain
himself and a woman he met at a nightclub in Thika and who would later rob him.
The woman,
according to the DCI, is part of the infamous drink-spiking syndicate.
“Immediately
Kamau received the initial Ksh.10,000, he went to a club in Thika to irrigate
his throat and make merry in the company of a babe he had met. And as fate
would have it, the woman turned out to be a pishori admin who laced his drink
with an unknown substance and stole the cash,” added the DCI.
After
regaining consciousness, Kamau on Thursday, called his parents claiming that
his ‘abductors’ were demanding money and they sent him a further Ksh.40,000.
However,
Kamau was not aware that detectives had already begun trailing the number.
Detectives following
up on the matter caught up with him and took him for questioning where he claimed he
was trying to recover last semester’s school fees that he had
squandered.
He was
found with Ksh.38,600 which he had withdrawn and stashed in his shoes.
“He further
disclosed that he had been ‘kidnapped’ alongside two other students whose
parents had paid their ransoms,” said the DCI.
Kamau is detained at Kayole Police Station pending arraignment.
