Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has mourned the victims of a tragic road accident that occurred earlier Friday evening in Kijauri, Nyamira County, calling for swift intervention to avert similar tragedies in future.
In a statement released following the deadly crash, Matiang’i expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, describing the incident as “heartwrenching and unbearable.”
While the exact number of fatalities is yet to be confirmed officially, the
former CS noted that the accident had claimed “so many active lives,” and
extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
“I am very
devastated by the painful loss of so many active lives,” Matiang’i said. “I
sympathise with the bereaved families and send them my heartfelt condolences.”
Matiang’i further
urged relevant government authorities to take immediate action to complete the
long-stalled Kijauri market project and relocate horticultural traders who
currently operate dangerously close to the busy highway.
“I hasten to urge
all relevant authorities to do all it would take to complete the stalled market
in Kijauri and relocate the horticultural traders off the main highway,” he
said.
The former
minister pledged to work closely with Borabu MP Patrick Osero and Nyamira
Senator Okong’o Omogeni to support families affected by the accident.
“We will assist
the affected families as they go through this painful experience of mourning
the dead and planning for their send-off,” Matiang’i stated.
The accident has
sparked fresh calls for improved road safety and infrastructure planning in the
region, with residents urging the government to prioritise long-promised
developments to prevent future loss of life.
