On Friday, a group of reformed youth in Mathare halted their ecological activities to protest recent harassment and assaults allegedly perpetrated by police officers and members of the Nyumba Kumi initiative during ongoing security operations in the area

Several youths reported being assaulted during a recent operation, leaving some with serious injuries.

The security operation, aimed at flushing out a suspect linked to a recent murder incident in the area, has led to incidents of harassment and violence against the youth.

They have expressed frustration at being unfairly targeted, questioning why they are not being apprehended if they are indeed considered suspects.

The group insisted they have reformed and are now focused on lawful activities that contribute positively to the community.

Their initiatives include environmental conservation efforts such as tree planting along riparian land and vegetable farming as a means of earning a living.

While Nyumba Kumi elders have acknowledged the existence of the security operation, they emphasised their determination to leave no stone unturned in pursuing those involved in criminal activities.

The Mathare social justice centre, a community-based organization, has strongly condemned the harassment, describing it as the criminalization of reformed youth who are striving to make meaningful contributions to their community.
