Marjan Hussein Marjan sworn in as new IEBC CEO
Marjan was sworn in on Wednesday at the Supreme Court during a ceremony presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome.
In his speech, the new boss assured that the electoral body would oversee all aspects of the August General and make sure it is free and fair.
“We are in the middle of preparing for the elections as we have a few days left until the 9th of August and the Commission is committed to conduct a free and fair election,” said Marjan.
“All our processes are up-to-date in terms of our election preparation timelines,” added Marjan.
IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati, on his part, stated that the body was on track with preparation activities towards the polls, noting that voters will soon embark on an audit exercise to verify their details.
“We are on course with procurement. We recently got a voters register auditor and are working on a register now so that it can be audited and kenyans to verify the details,” said Chebukati.
CJ Koome meanwhile said that the commission had partnered with the Judiciary Committee on Elections (JCE) to train judges in handling election-related cases.
“We are working with IEBC and JCE in training judges and magistrates in preparation for electoral disputes. We have also shared experiences from presidential petitions on how to improve future elections,” said the CJ.
Marjan had served in the role in an acting capacity, and is the first non-lawyer to hold the position.
Confirming his appointment last week, Chebukati said Marjan was found as the most suitable out of the five candidates who were interviewed.
He holds an MBA in Strategic Management from the University of Nairobi and BCom (Accounting Option) from the same institution.
He is also a certified Public Accountant (CPA-K), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certification in Control Self-Assessment (CCSA), Certified Quality Assessor (CQA) and is also a practicing Member of ICPAK in good standing.
Marjan is also a member of Information Systems Audit & Control Association (ISACA) as well as a member of Institute Internal Auditor (IIA).
