A Meru court has slapped a man with a 6-year jail term after he was found guilty of vandalising and stealing electricity equipment.

Josphat Mureithi who was arrested after the stolen equipment was found hidden in his rabbits’ hutch, was sentenced by Tigania Law Courts Senior Resident Magistrate Rose Ongira.

This comes two days after another man in Kisumu was handed a 20-year jail for vandalizing a KPLC transformer.

Polycarp Nyokaye Aringo was facing 12 counts after he was arrested in 2021 for being behind the vandalism of four transformers; two in Nyando, one in Seme and another one in Nyakach.

Kisumu Law Courts Senior Principal Magistrate Hon Ezekiel Obina handed Aringo a 5-year sentence to each of the 12 counts citing that the charges were of serious economic crimes.

In a statement, Kenya Power’s Acting Security Services Manager Stephen Muoka said that the two incidents are a testament to the intensified nationwide crackdown on KPLC equipment vandals who have crippled service delivery to citizens.

“We have scaled up surveillance on the network to get rid of any illegal activities that endanger the lives of the public and deny revenue to the Company," he said.

"We thank the Judiciary for the support they have accorded us, which we are confident will go a long way to deter criminals."
