Police in Eldoret have
arrested a man alleged to have been destroying newly planted tree seedlings in the
streets of Eldoret town.
As the Uasin Gishu County
government prepares for the conferment of Eldoret town to city status next week, police say the man was captured on CCTV uprooting the new plants.
He was arrested in
Eldoret’s central business district and is being held at Eldoret Central Police
Station.
The authorities are
yet to establish his mission while some people allege he is not of sound mind.
This comes barely a
day after the leadership from the North Rift region met in Eldoret town to
spearhead the preparations for the big day to be presided over by President
William Ruto and other senior government officials on August 8.
President Ruto will hand
over the city charter to Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii.
On Monday, Bii hosted
the county chiefs as well as Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich and his
Turkana counterpart Jeremiah Lomurukai of Turkana, alongside several MPs to plan
for next week’s fete.
Eldoret will be
Kenya’s fifth city after Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa and Nakuru
