Malala summons Nairobi UDA MCAs amid party leadership wrangles
The United
Democratic Alliance (UDA) party Secretary General Cleophas Malala has reversed
changes that were effected by a section of UDA leadership at the Nairobi County
Assembly.
Instead,
the SG convened a meeting on Thursday for all the elected UDA MCAs in Nairobi to
deliberate on the purported changes and establish the bone of contention.
In a
letter addressed to the county assembly speaker, MCAs seeking to remove
Minority leader Antony Kiragu and Minority Whip Mark Mugambi have proposed
Waithera Chege as their minority leader and Joyce Muthoni as minority whip.
SG
Malala said the status quo will remain until Thursday's meeting, adding that
the party will remain neutral amid calls to change the party leadership in the
house.
“We
shall meet at 10 a.m. to establish who is in support of this motion and who is
not. As a secretariat we will be fair; if the signatures are presented to
support the bid, even if the leaders involved are my friends, I will not hesitate
to let them go,” Malala said on Monday.
“I
will go with the majority’s decision… as for the issue of the minority leader, we
shall still follow the law which says the speaker must first communicate. That
has not happened yet and until then, the people in question maintain their
positions.”
However,
the embattled MCAs claim there are 'external forces' trying to flex muscles on
the UDA leadership affairs within the county.
Malala
urged the MCAs to remain calm and united devoid of division to enable the county
government led by Governor Johnson Sakaja to deliver seamlessly.
