Mai Mahiu tragedy: 28 people still missing as 71 confirmed dead
28 people are still missing from the killer floods in Mai Mahiu,
Nakuru County, that have so far claimed the lives of 71 residents.
The Ministry of Interior on Tuesday issued a statement saying 46
people had died from the tragedy while 53 others were still missing.
However, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said by Tuesday
morning 71 people had been confirmed dead, meaning 28 were still unaccounted
for.
Kithure Kindiki's ministry further said the counties that have
been adversely affected by floods in the last 24 hours are Nairobi, Tana River,
West Pokot, and Homa Bay.
Also, landslides and mudslides have affected residents in
Muranga and Nakuru counties.
So far, a total of 169 lives have been lost due to the
floods, with 102 people injured across the affected regions.
At least 30,099 households have been displaced, affecting
approximately 150,495 people. In Sindo, Homa Bay County, 161 households were
displaced by the flash floods after following a heavy downpour in the
area.
Overall, 190,942 individuals have been affected by the
flooding in the country.
"We are actively carrying out search, rescue, and retrieval
operations particularly in Nakuru due to the recent mudslide and have rescued
23 people in Garissa," the Interior Ministry said.
A reporting desk manned by representatives from the national
government, Nakuru county, and the Kenya Red Cross has been set up at the site
of the tragedy in Mai Mahiu.
