Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha.
Speaking during a classroom inspection exercise in Kiambu on Saturday, Magoha said that the registration deadline has been pushed to September 10 as it was earlier slated for August 30.
CS Magoha attributed the extension to delays caused by the just-concluded General Election and the upcoming polls set to be conducted in Kakamega, Mombasa counties and other constituencies on Monday.
"We have done extremely well in terms of registering our children in Grade 6 with regards to selection and we have also interfered with some dates, we have also had hiccups and we will have more on Monday in some areas, therefore as a government we have decided to make the final extension for the school selection process," said Magoha.
"I think it is better we give them another ten days so that by the 10th of September if your child has not selected the school now it becomes their own problem."
Grade 6 students will be joining Grade Seven in January after sitting for their Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) in November 2022.
The students are expected to select their preferred schools through an online KNEC portal managed by their schools.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Education the students are required to pick national, regional, county, sub-county, and private schools.
Magoha further instructed students to pick two in each category for national, regional and private schools.
