Machakos University closed indefinitely
Machakos
University has been closed down indefinitely after students went on a rampage
early Wednesday, engaging police officers in running battles and grounding
transportation on the busy Machakos-Wote road to a halt.
In a
memo to all students, the University Vice Chancellor Lucy Irungu said the
decision was informed by the evolving security situation around the university
and the ongoing students’ demonstrations.
According
to the VC, a special meeting convened on Wednesday, December 7, resolved to
have the university closed with immediate effect.
Students
have been advised to vacate the school premises with immediate effect, with the university saying further communication as to the resumption of learning will
be communicated.
The
latest comes just hours after students went on a rampage, apparently after word
broke out that a student who was shot by a stray bullet during the Monday
demonstrations had succumbed
at the Machakos Level 5 Hospital.
The
student was reportedly shot during protests against increased insecurity around
the campus after one of the students, reportedly waylaid by thugs succumbed to
injuries at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
