Police in Masinga, Machakos County, are on the hunt for a herder who reportedly severed the hand of another cowhand following a dispute over grazing land on Monday.

The victim, 27-year-old Francis Mithanga Muteti, also suffered a deep cut on the head following the altercation reported to authorities by a village elder.

"Police officers rushed to the scene at Kiliala village and they found the victim's left hand having been completely chopped off at the wrist and he had a deep cut on his  head and was bleeding furiously," a police report documenting the incident reads in part.

A panga, which police believe was used in the attack, was recovered at the scene and kept as an exhibit.

The victim was correspondingly rushed to the Gakuku Mission Hospital for treatment.

"His family members insisted to proceed  to hospital with the part of the body that was cut off in order to try surgical alternative," added the police report.

"The suspect is still at large and efforts to arrest him ongoing."
