Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has launched the issuance of 50,000 title deeds to residents in a move that seeks to empower residents to secure their parcels of land.

Governor Ndeti kicked off the exercise on Thursday by issuing 1000 title deeds to residents of Kibauni Ward in Mwala Constituency.

The process was overseen by Machakos Land Registrar Dorothy Letting and Machakos County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands Nathaniel Nganga.

Wavinya underscored that the process would reduce the bureaucracy of having to visit county offices for the application and collection of deeds, adding that having the vital documents would empower the welfare of the people.

"Our people have suffered a lot for lack of title deeds. They have applied for the deeds but are unable to travel to Machakos to collect them. We have agreed with the Registrar that every time we have such events, we call them and ensure they collect the documents. These title deeds will empower you but do not sell all your land,” said Governor Ndeti.

The Governor said her administration had done special planning to guide development in the county for the next  10 years.

Ms Letting pointed out that the national government in collaboration with county governments has promised to issue 3 million title deeds free of charge to citizens.

"When we were doing the valuation roll for Machakos, we realized that we had over 40,000 titles pending collection. The government is giving 3 million titles for free in the five years the current president is in office," she said.

Elated beneficiaries in Mwala expressed their joy as they breathed a sigh of relief after a long wait.

"Today I have received title deeds for my father's land and I am happy because we have been waiting for a long time," Domitila Masila of Ikalaasa village said.

Another resident, Bibian Mutindi from Tulila, said she was unable to travel to Machakos Town for the processing of the title and the exercise would now bring peace to many homes which used to have land-related conflicts.

Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi on his part asked residents to support the Governor in order to deliver on her development agenda.

The county boss will be launching projects across the Machakos for the next 16 days in her development tour.
